The natural shape of some toenails can be very curved, and unfortunately this can cause problems if the nail begins to push into or pierce the skin causing ingrowing toenails. Footwear that is too tight, cutting your nails poorly or injury to the toe could also lead to ingrowing nails, causing irritation, inflammation or infection.Β Β
Ingrowing nails can be very painful, but we are here to help you manage the symptoms and get rid of the problem. We can show you how to cut your nails correctly and in mild cases, remove a small part of the nail immediately to relieve the symptoms. If the ingrowing nail has caused an infection, you may need antibiotics and if we are unable to remove the nail during conservative treatment, surgery may be advised to remove part or all the offending nail, depending on its presentation.Β Β
Surgery is a relatively simple procedure that we can offer in our clinic with a high success rate and is carried out under local anesthetic. We usually advise the use of a chemical during the procedure, which prevents re-growth of the problem part of the nail and is a more permanent solution to the problem, but you can opt to allow the nail to grow back.Β
