Corns & Calluses

Corns and calluses usually develop on the feet in response to pressure or friction. Corns are the result of a focal point of pressure, for example on the top or side of a toe which is being rubbed by another toe or shoe. Callus is an area of much thicker skin anywhere on the foot, for example under the ball of the foot or around the heels.

There are several factors that can cause corns or calluses including too much pressure on one area of the foot, poor foot mechanics, poorly fitting footwear or backless shoes.

Corns are often painful due to their density

Callus may become painful if the layers of skin build up too much. Sometimes blisters or bleeding can form underneath. It can also crack, creating painful fissures, often located around the heels, making walking very painful and increasing the risk of infection.

So you can see, it is a good idea to prevent this by maintaining the skin and avoiding build up.
