Osteoarthritis

This is a degenerative condition of the joints that is caused by various factors including biomechanics (the way we move) and trauma. Pain is caused by the joint losing its natural cushioning and position, meaning that the bones begin to rub against each other. The risk of osteoarthritis increases as we age, although it is not inevitable for everyone.

One of the most affected joints is the great toe, which may begin to stiffen, become painful and display bony growth over the top of the joint. This may affect your ability to walk and be very painful. This is also called Hallux Limitus or Rigidus in later stages.

Osteoarthritis may also affect other joints such as the knees and ankles and can be diagnosed and treated clinically to reduce the symptoms, although surgical intervention may be possible if other treatments do not help.

We can provide custom made insoles to ensure you have the most comfort possible and your gait (way of walking) doesn’t cause further damage to the joints or other tissues. We can also advise on the best footwear to maximise your mobility and comfort and offer laser therapy for gentle and effective pain relief on any joint.
