Plantar Warts/Verrucae

Warts on the sole of the foot are called verrucae, caused by a virus which resides in the skin and creates a cauliflower like growth, often with small dots. Verrucae may be singular or multiple. They can be painless or very uncomfortable.

Hard skin will usually grow over the top which may make the verruca painful to walk on, especially if it is present on a high weight bearing area. It’s important to get a proper diagnosis as verrucae may resemble other lesions such as corns or vice versa and treatment for each varies.

Verrucae will sometimes resolve without treatment, especially in children and young people, but sometimes persist for longer or spread to other areas of the foot. If you think you have a verruca and it is causing discomfort, there are various treatment options we can offer to help you get rid of it. Over the counter treatments may work with regular removal of the hard skin, but if this doesn’t, we can advise and treat the verrucae using a variety of other treatment modalities.
